Ma'am...it is nice (with all that's going on in the DRC) to see all the smiling in that picture by everyone. (Save maybe the littlest person who might not understand what's going on with the camera!)
That was an abnormally not-so-hot day in kindu, which generally has highs in the 90s for most of the year. Maniema is quite the hot province - cities like goma and lubumbashi are much cooler.
as for keeping cool...we just get used to it and use fans. the rainy season (december-april) has lots of thunderstorms that come and go quickly and frequently. the rains cause huge problems for transport since the roads in the interior are dirt ones.

OK, I gotta ask... Where the heck is Kindu??? I've checked my atlas and can't find it - can you give me the whereabouts from Kinshasa?
Many thanks. I've enjoyed your blog for some time.
Yes, people don't really mope around!
Kindu is 200 miles east of Bujumbura (capital of Burundi, which will definitely be in the atlas). I'll try to post a DRC map.
One question, Sarah.
I noticed you are in a jacket with a scarf, and sandals.
How warm does it get there, and how cool? Do you get frequent thunderstorms in that region?

They adopt the kung-fu poses for me too. Why, do they do that?
